Arc de Triomphe Wrapped, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, 2021

Arc de Triomphe.

Location

Located 2 kilometers fromthe Pont de la Concorde and 1.5 kilometers from the Eiffel Tower and the Pont d'Iéna—and on display from September 18 through October 3, 2021—the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe piqued the curiosity of many onlookers as it was being installed.

The Arc de Triomphe, transformed, at the very top of the Champs-Élysées in Paris, has added to the beauty of what is already the most beautiful avenue in the world! The public flocked there from the very first day this temporary exhibition opened, and even more so during the building’s nighttime illumination. It’s safe to say it was well worth the trip.

With the support of the Centre Pompidou and the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, this project required 25,000 m² of recyclable bluish-silver polypropylene fabric and 7,000 meters of red rope.

A testament to the beauty of the ephemeral, thecreation of this work was entirely self-funded through the sale of preparatory studies, drawings, collages, models, works from the 1960s, and lithographs—and, more recently, through an auction at Sotheby’s and several exhibition sales.
The project received no public or private funding.

Crowd

More than six million tourists traveled to see this temporary artwork, and approximately 700 million people were exposed to coverage of the event through the media (source: Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau (OTCP) Observatory).
It’s true that the spectacle was magnificent. A unique and timeless work of art—the Arc de Triomphe all wrapped up!
