Le Zouave du Pont de l'Alma

Le Zouave du Pont de l'Alma

The Zouave

This stone statue is located under the Pont de l'Alma bridge, close to the Eiffel Tower.
Created by Geoges Diebolt and dated 1956.

There were originally four sculptures representing the troops who fought in the Crimean War.
This is the only one that remains fixed under the bridge (upstream side), the others can be found at
- Chasseur à pieds à Joinville-le-Pont (Val-de-Marne)
- L'Artilleur à La Fère (Aisne).
- Le Grenadier in Dijon (Côte-d'Or)

The Zouave is a valuable indicator for Parisians who come to see where the Seine is in relation to his feet...
If the Seine flows under his feet, it's normal!
If the Seine flows over the Zouave's feet, it's the start of a flood!
If the Seine flows over his belly, it's a major flood!

For boaters and regular users of the Seine, thehydrometric scale at the Pont d'Austerlitz isthe reference point.
